Adminstration
There are four parties involved in the administration of Academic Integrity policy.
- The Executive Committee on Academic Integrity
- Reviews the Academic Integrity Policy and its practices
- The Administrative Coordinator for Academic Integrity
- Student Affairs representative to assist in the process
- The Academic Integrity Advisory Group
- Comprised of committed faculty members who can provide leadership to
and education of other faculty members on academic integrity matters
- A Panel of Faculty and Students
- Involved in Disciplinary Hearings
The Executive Committee on Academic Integrity
Members
This group shall be composed two full-time faculty members, one undergraduate and one graduate student.
- Faculty Members
- The faculty members shall be appointed by the Chancellor with the advice of the Provost and the Dean of the Graduate School. The faculty members shall normally be appointed for two-year, staggered terms.
- The Graduate Student
- The graduate student shall be appointed by the President of the Graduate Student Association. The graduate student shall be appointed for a one-year term with the possibility of re-appointment.
- The Undergraduate Student
- The undergraduate student shall be the Attorney General of Student Government.
The Coordinator for Academic Integrity shall serve as ex-officio to the committee and serve as convener to the group, as necessary.
Duties
The duties of the Committee include:
- to inform faculty and students about the Academic Integrity Policy and encourage ongoing discussions about it; and
- to review annually the Academic Integrity Policy and its practices and insure that these practices and policy statements remain an accurate reflection of the community concerns with academic integrity. In this light, the committee shall submit an annual report on the Academic Integrity Policy to the Chancellor and the Faculty Senate detailing any recommendations for modifications of policy or practice.
- to determine suspension or expulsion for students found responsible for a second offense, determine the appropriate period of suspension when needed (see IV.B.9.) or make recommendation for expulsion to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.
Rules
Quorum is the presence of a simple majority of the Executive Committee either in person or electronically if the issue is not related to an individual case.
Decisions by the committee shall be reached by a majority of the eligible voting members present.
Administrative Coordinator for Academic Integrity
The Administrative Coordinator for Academic Integrity is the Dean of Students.
Duties shall include the following:
- The Coordinator shall receive forms recording the agreement that an
academic offense occurred and the sanction assigned for those offenses
handled by faculty member and student.
- All requests for hearings on cases of alleged academic offenses shall
be directed initially to the Coordinator, who shall then be responsible
for gathering all information related to the charges, drawing the hearing
panel, and notifying the student concerning the allegations and conduct
of the hearing process in accord with the standards of the Student Code
of Conduct.
- The Coordinator shall maintain all records of academic offenses by
students whether resolved by faculty-student agreement or by a hearing
panel. These files shall be permanently maintained in the Dean of Students
Office pursuant to the University Record Retention Schedule.
- The Coordinator shall provide procedural interpretations of the Academic
Integrity Policy, make recommendations to the Executive Committee concerning
proposed changes in the policy and provide advice and information concerning
the policy to the general campus community.
The Academic Integrity Advisory Group
This group shall be composed of one faculty member from each of the professional
schools, Jackson Library, and at least one faculty member from the College
of Arts and Sciences, plus others as deemed appropriate by either the
Advisory Group or the Coordinator of Academic Integrity. The faculty members
will be appointed by their respective Deans for a two year term and subsequent
appointments will be rotated within the departments of the School (if
appropriate) and College.
The Coordinator of Academic Integrity will convene
the Advisory Group and will serve as the group's liaison with the Academic
Integrity Executive Committee with whom the Advisory Group will meet once
each academic year.
The functions of the Advisory Group are:
- To provide each School and the College with an interested and committed
faculty member who can provide leadership to and education of other faculty
members on academic integrity matters.
- To serve as an advisor to other faculty members on academic integrity
issues as questions arise.
- To provide feedback to the Coordinator of Academic Integrity and the
Academic Integrity Executive Committee on matters related to the policy
and its enforcement.
A Panel of Faculty and Students
A Hearing Panel shall be selected for those cases in which hearings are
requested.
- Each Hearing Panel shall consist of three faculty and three students
drawn from a pool of panelists identified and coordinated by the Office
of Student Affairs. Panel members shall be selected to correspond with
the affiliation of the student as graduate or undergraduate. No panel
member may be selected from the accused student's major department.
- Attendance at the hearing shall be limited to the accused student(s)
and student advocate, faculty member(s) making the allegation and case
coordinator, members of the hearing panel and the Administrative Coordinator
for Academic Integrity or his/her designee serving as hearing officer.
